Your Child's First Dental Visit

March 5, 2021 By Pediatric Dental Care

Your Child's First Dental Visit

By the time your child is a year old, they will have likely grown their first teeth, a milestone moment that also means it is time to schedule their first visit with a pediatric dentist. As even baby teeth require oral care, Dr. John Han and Dr. Fernanda Fontes of Pediatric Dental Care in Fairfax, Springfield, or Chantilly, VA, recommend scheduling an appointment as soon as your child's teeth start to grow in.

What can I expect at my child's first dental visit?

Your pediatric dentist will begin by asking you questions and having you complete forms about your child's dental and medical history before going over the information. During the examination, they will look at the gums, teeth, and jaw to make sure your child's teeth are coming in properly and check for any possible issues. We will likely apply a fluoride gel to your child's teeth to help protect them from decay. X-rays are unlikely to be necessary at a first appointment. Our team will make sure your child is as comfortable as possible during the examination because a good experience makes subsequent visits less stressful for children. Our dentists welcome any questions you may have about your child's dental health.

How often does my child need to come back to the dentist?

If your child requires follow-up services at our Fairfax, VA, office, we will schedule an appointment on-site. For preventative care, visits are recommended around every six months so your child's dentist can perform cleanings and examinations. During these visits, your child's dentist can check for cavities, damage, uneven tooth spacing, or other issues which require intervention or treatment. To help keep your child's teeth healthy between appointments, make sure to assist them with brushing twice a day, using fluoride toothpaste, and limiting their intake of sugary foods and drinks.Make an appointment for your child with Dr. Han or Dr. Fontes at our pediatric dentistry offices in Fairfax, Springfield, or Chantilly, VA, today by calling (703)-383-3434. You can also reach us at (703)-992-7100, or (703)-957-3190.
